United v City - Clattenburg is the Referee!
This Saturday, when the red and blue halves of Manchester go head-to-head, in the first Manchester derby of the 2016 / 2017 season, it`ll need an experienced head to referee the game.And it appears that is precisely what the Premier League have considered when it comes to allocating a referee for the game with it being confirmed that 41-year-oldMark Clattenburgwill be the man in the middle.Clattenburg has a wealth of experience having recently officiated at both the 2016 Champions League Final and also the Euro 2016 Final.Indeed the man from Consett, County Durham, is said to have marked that wonderful achievement by having commemorative tattoo`s etched on hisarm.Perhaps we should also point out that Clattenburg was the man-in-the-middle when the two Manchester sides last clashed, back in April 2016 when a United side managed by Louis van Gaal beat a City side managed by Manuel Pellegrini 4-2.Could that be an omen I wonder, could lightning strike twice?However, whilst the appointment of Clattenburg is generally applauded, weshould point out there is a little historybetween the referee and our own Jose Mourinho, during his time at Chelsea Mourinho was scalded for sarcastically applauding Clattenburg after the 'Special One` objected to a decision made.Also, although we started this article suggesting it needed an experienced head in charge, I can`t help but recall that, towards the back end of last season when Chelsea and Spurs clashed in a tempestuous affair that saw both sides charged by the authorities and Moussa Dembele served with a six-game ban, it was Clattenburg who, watching the game on the television, let things slip from his grasp very early on.Let`s hope, come Saturday, Clattenburg is remembered for all the right reasons come the final whistle.
